CHHAs in New Jersey are regulated by the State Board of Nursing and must satisfy state-regulated training requirements by licensed training facilities. Their training includes a minimum of 96 hours of clinical practice and classroom training on safety issues, body mechanics, bodily systems and special home care training. A CHHA must renew her/his certification every 2 years if in good standing.
In addition, a CHHA goes through criminal background checks, including fingerprinting and must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S..
Most good employers today understand that selecting and retaining the right employee is THE most important part of any business’ success. And Generations’ process is unequaled in its thoroughness and thoughtfulness. At its core our process is designed to focus not just on an employee’s technical competencies; we want truly compassionate, caring people. So we interview every candidate several times, and the fundamental question we use to assess her or him is “Would I have her/him provide care to my own family?” But the selection process requires more than just good intuition.
To start with, Generations is one of very few firms in New Jersey that assesses its CHHA candidates using leading edge, validated behavioral assessments, that measure an individual's normal personality, cognitive reasoning and attitudes.
A team of Ph.D. Industrial/Organizational Psychologists, using the most widely accepted methodologies for test development and validation, created the assessment methodology we use before hiring any CHHA.
Each candidate goes through our assessment after a preliminary interview. The assessment tests several dimensions including conscientiousness, integrity and various personality profiles. Based on those assessments candidates are interviewed again to test specific issues or clarifications derived from the profiles they’ve completed. In addition to ensuring we get the very best employees, this process enables us to match the personalities of our CHHAs with clients in a more professional and diligent manner than is typical in the industry.
Finally, our CHHAs also go through our own series of background reference and criminal checks, above and beyond what’s required by their State certification. We bond every CHHA, so we verify their records to ensure they can be bonded. We review their past experiences to determine their working capabilities and check their references carefully to help ensure they’re right for Generations and our clients.
In short, there is no agency in New Jersey which has a more complete, professional and comprehensive selection process than that used by Generations. And that process ensures we hire only the very best employees.
The CHHA provides authorized services, as appropriate, such as exercise regimens, medication reminders, bathing, toileting, personal meal preparation, dressing, feeding, light housekeeping and laundering, and basic errands. An important role of a CHHA, of course, is being a companion to the client…someone reliable, supportive and caring, someone who can fill-in for the primary caregivers.
It is important to understand that the CHHA is not a housekeeper or chore worker, and will not generally do more than incidental cooking, shopping, housekeeping or laundry.
No. New Jersey law and regulation do not permit CHHAs to be privately employed. They must work through a licensed home health care services agency, like Generations Home Healthcare, LLC, and under the supervision of a licensed RN, employed by the agency. In addition to the regulation of CHHAs provided by our State Board of Nursing, home health care services agencies, like Generations, are regulated by the State Department of Law and Public Safety, Division of Consumer Affairs.
First and foremost, you should only use a CHHA, through a reliable, licensed agency, to ensure you or your loved one is receiving trained and knowledgeable care. You deserve peace of mind and your loved one deserves competent care, so hiring a CHHA should be your very first requirement.
Secondly, CHHAs are employees of Generations, which handles all the legal and statutory requirements attached to the employment relationship; Generations handles workers’ compensation, State and Federal payroll taxes, etc.. This means that you do not incur any of the potential legal liabilities or complex reporting obligations of an employer.
Finally, Generations’ CHHAs have gone through a rigorous selection process. So when you’re presented with a CHHA by Generations you can be assured that she/he is exactly as represented…capable, reliable, well-trained and, most importantly, compassionate and caring.
