As a caregiver, serving healthy, balanced meals is likely to be part of your everyday routine.  You know the importance of a healthy diet as it helps your loved one to stay healthier, happier, and more energetic.  Unfortunately, sometimes we can get into a rut with healthy eating and cooking, however.  Healthy foods that are filled with nutrients are always great choices, but when you use the same ingredients day after day it can get boring sometimes.  When the seasons change, it is a great time to make some changes to your usual meal routine.  New fruits and vegetables will be in season and your loved one’s cravings may change depending on the weather.  This fall, why not add some variety into your loved one’s usual breakfasts by using some fall flavors.  Your breakfasts can still be very healthy and rich in nutrients, but they will also be interesting and different.  Try out a few of these ideas to help get you started.

Homemade Applesauce

Applesauce with cinnamon is a classic fall treat and it can be a great item to serve at breakfast along with toast, eggs, or oatmeal.  A serving of applesauce will count as one of your loved one’s servings of fruit for the day and it will provide them with vitamin C and fiber.  Try making your own in a slow cooker with cinnamon.  Recipes will typically call for sugar, but to make this breakfast item healthier, try cutting the sugar content in half.

Pumpkin and Yogurt Dip

Dips are usually reserved for snacks and parties, but this healthy dip can be enjoyed with fruit for a filling breakfast.  Simply combine some pumpkin puree with plain greek yogurt and then add pumpkin pie spices to taste such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.   You can sweeten the dip with honey if your loved one prefers, as well.  Serve this dip with fresh apple slices.

Fall Flavored Steel Cut Oats

Steel cut oats are a wonderful breakfast choice because they are filled with fiber and they are a heart healthy food.  Make your loved one’s steel cut oats rich with fall flavor by adding diced apples into the oats while they are cooking.  The apples will cook down and their flavor will fill the entire pot of oats.  In addition, add some cinnamon and a little brown sugar.  For extra flavor, cook the oats in vanilla-flavored unsweetened almond milk.
